DinoLand U.S.A

Just as it sounds, this is the place to come in contact with re-created prehistoric creatures, including the fear-inspiring carnotaurus and the gentle iguanodon. The landscaping includes live plants that have evolved over the last 65 million years. In collaboration with Chicago’s Field Museum, Disney displays a complete, full-scale skeleton cast of Dino-Sue—also known as “Sue”—the 65-million-year-old Tyrannosaurus rex discovered near the Black Hills of South Dakota.

After admiring Sue, you can go on the thrilling DINOSAUR ride, play in the Boneyard, or take in the Finding Nemo: The Musical show at the Theater in the Wild. Kids will want to try the TriceraTop Spin and the Primeval Whirl family coaster, which has spinning “time machines.” There’s no need to dig for souvenirs at Chester and Hester’s Dinosaur Treasures gift shop—all you need is your wallet.

Quick Bites: Famished, but no time for lunch? Make tracks for Trilo-Bites and dig into a dino-size turkey leg. Or grab a burger and fries at Restaurantosaurus and you’ll be ready to take on T. rex.

Boneyard. Youngsters can slide, dig, bounce, slither, and stomp around this archeological-dig-site-cum-playground, the finest play area in any of the four Disney parks. In addition to a huge sand pit where children can dig for mammoth bones, there are twisting short and long slides, climbing nets, caves, and a jeep to climb on. Stomp on the dino footprints to make ‘em roar. For people with disabilities: This fossil play maze is wheelchair accessible. TIP Let the kids burn off energy here while waiting for a DINOSAUR Fastpass appointment. Or head over late in the day when kids need to run free. | Duration: Up to You. Crowds: Moderate to Heavy. Audience: Small Kids.

DINOSAUR.

This wild adventure through time puts you face-to-face with huge dinosaurs that move and breathe with uncanny realism. When a carload of guests rouses a cantankerous carnotaurus from his Cretaceous slumber, it’s showtime. You travel back 65 million years on a fast-paced, twisting adventure and try to save the last living iguanodon as a massive asteroid hurtles toward Earth. Exciting Audio-Animatronics and special effects bring to life dinosaurs like the raptor, pterodactyl, styracosaurus, alioramus, and compsognathus. Be prepared for a short but steep drop toward the end of the ride.

Guests who are pregnant or have back, neck, or heart problems should avoid this very bumpy ride. The jostling and realistic carnivores may frighten young children. For people with disabilities: You must transfer from your wheelchair to board this ride. Equipped for video-captioning and assisted-listening devices. No service animals. TIP Come first thing in the morning or at the end of the day, or use Fastpass. | Duration: Under 4 mins. Crowds: Heavy. Audience: All but Small Kids. Height minimum: 40 inches.

Timing Tip: Because of the proximity of the two attractions, Finding Nemo: The Musical is a good place to take younger kids while older siblings do Expedition Everest. If there’s not a long wait for Everest, however, the entire family should see Nemo together.
